Horse Trekking at Oxford
Come for a half day horse trek at Kowhai and you can enjoy riding a well schooled horse in the country.
Expect 1.5 - 2 hours trekking, allow 3 hours total.
  • No minimum number.
  • Only 10 minutes drive from Oxford.
  • Treks departing 2:00pm daily.
  • Qualmark endorsed visitor activity.
  • Great views of the Canterbury Plains all the way back to Christchurch
  • Treks available for different levels - flat farm land, willow trees and river, hill country
  • Complete beginners to advanced riders are welcome.
  • Over 90 well schooled horses available.
  • Open 7 days.
  • All treks include basic instruction.
  • Riding hats & whips are provided for your use.
  • Transfers from Christchurch or Oxford available.

  • Maximum rider weight is 100kg

    Please note that Kowhai is not a horse trekking center where you arrive to a saddled horse ready to go, riders at Kowhai help with catching, grooming etc and this is reflected in the cost. If you are on a limited time schedule or want your horse to be ready upon arrival please add $35.00 to the fee when booking.

    Yes you can book by phone with a credit card - call 03 3124309 9am to 9pm 7 days.
    No bookings are accepted without payment. (if you do not have a credit card you can go to any Visitor Information center to make the booking)


    Long trousers, not jeans - track pants would be ideal.
    Shoes with a small heel- runners or track shoes are OK or you can hire jodhpur boots for $5 day

    Money! (EFT-POS or credit cards are fine) small shop available that sells cold drinks, chocolate, chips etc.

  • Bookings are fully transferable if you give us more than 24 hours notice.
  • We reserve the right to cancel treks on days where circumstances beyond our control would affect the safety of horses and riders, the fee is then transferable or will be fully refunded.
  • No shows will result in the total loss of the fee paid

    * some help required, may include catching, grooming and tack cleaning after.
